The Giant Claw

So, as most of our viewers know, the gang gets together on an infrequent basis and watches movies while babbling through most of them.  On our birthdays, we break from the format and inflict our personal choices on the group.  Last night was Andrea's turn and it wasn't a bad evening for a change.  We started first with a few educational shorts including how to make a sandwich.

This was followed by the first episodes of Mannix and Police Squad!, both hilarious in their own right.  And then Andrea ended it by showing us The Giant Claw, a 1950's B-movie about a giant bird that attacks the world.  Originally, the producers were going to use stop animation from Ray Harryhausen, but they couldn't afford it, so they went with a puppet as you can see from the trailer.  The sad part is, the movie wasn't that bad save for the puppet and the wonky science.  It had Inspector Henderson from The Adventures of Superman as a colonel which was pretty cool.  It can also make a great drinking game as you take a shot every time they refer to the bird being as big as a battleship, or when the general gets touchy-feely with the main male lead, or when they say dime.  Worth a look and for once I'm able to report that none of my brains got away from me.

Glad you guys had fun!

In case you're curious, the short films we watched, including "Let's Make a Sandwich", "You're Growing Up", and "As Others See Us," were from a DVD called How to Be a Woman: Classic Educational Shorts Volume 2.  There's a lot of entertaining stuff there :)

And you know, every time I watch The Giant Claw, I honestly forget how many times the word "battleship" is used in the description of just how big the creature is.  It makes me want to go back in time to find the writers of this film and hit them repeatedly with a thesaurus.

Oh, and here's one of my favorite reviews of The Giant Claw.  Oh, wait a minute ... I love this one, too!

Heh!

I particularly like this quote from the badmovies.org review:

"If that did not get your attention, how about this: any movie bold enough to feature a GIANT ANTIMATTER SPACE BUZZARD is a movie worth watching.

Go ahead and try to contradict me. Tell me that, somewhere in the back of your mind, the idea of seeing a real, live
GIANT ANTIMATTER SPACE BUZZARD fails to cause a pleasant tingle. For me, it feels like somebody is massaging my hippocampus while wearing a joy buzzer. I giggle hysterically. If the tickling goes on too long I might become a vegetable, lose control of my bowels, or both (while still consumed by hysterical giggling).

I am careful not to watch "The Giant Claw" too often."

"What?  Too much?"

Not the worst...

Andrea has made us watch.  That would be The Pirate Movie starring Kristy McNichol. God that was awful.  And I've seen worse cheesy "special effects."

Cool

You know, it's nice to know that after all these years, you guys managed to remain friends.  I guess that's why the podcast is working so well for you.  I'll be curious to hear what Orenthal, Judy, and Keith thought of the movie.
