Episode One - What is the Rift?

John S. Drew's picture

One hour and fifty minutes!  Too much?  Not enough?  How about the review segments?  What worked and what didn't work?  Speak your mind here.

Yes, I cheated and posted the episode before time was up, but not everyone knew that.  This is a perk for those who signed up early for the website.  I'm not mentioning that it's ready until Monday to anyone else.

Thanks for your support.

Congrats!

Great first show!  You guys are family and it shows.  Interesting personalities and fun segments.  I'd would try to trim it down to an hour.  30 minutes is too short for such a large group, but more than 90 minutes might be more than people can fit into their free time.  We're all running around like crazy these days; we want podcasts that tuck neatly into workouts, drives to work, etc.

Congrats!  The Rift is back.

BTW, I'd love to put together some bumps and stings for you, if you want.

Long-Winded

We did tend to go on too much.  I also wasn't expecting just about everyone to contribute a review segment to the show this time around.  I was figuring that, at most, we would have a 90 minute show.

  • Ten minutes for "Bringing it to the Table".  (We were about twenty.  We have to cut that down if it's to continue.)
  • Twenty minutes for the review segments.  (Some of the segments were long and our commentary following added to it.  Something has to give there.)
  • Thirty minutes to an one hour for the Roundtable.  (This is key.  One of the complaints of the old TV show was that we cut off our guests after twenty minutes.  A panel at a con lasts an hour.  Basically, I liken this to a panel at a con.)

First show

One word review: Great!!!

You have put a great show together. When I saw a hour and fifty minutes my first reaction was "oh boy this is long". But when I listened it drew me in

. You can really feel the chemistry the group has and the depth of knowledge the group mind has is impressive. So great job and when I get to the computer I will post this to the forums.

I wonder if every month we

I wonder if every month we can expect the same order with the reviews, that is, books, DVDs, etc. etc. I think it would help create consistency.

Also, the intro music seemed way too long. It went from roughly 1:07 all the way until 1:55. Clipping that a bit (or talking over it with intros) would save time.

It was pretty enjoyable for a first run. I liked it.

Actually, I'm thinking that

Actually, I'm thinking that not everyone needs to contribute every month.  I wasn't expecting everyone to do so.  We were actually missing two planned segments and we still went overtime.

Good Point

The Music did seem long.  Also the ads in the show.  Some were very long, almost like content.

I'd think about just incorporating it into the show. (Talk about it and set it up) so people are not left wondering what they are listening to.

I'm looking into a shorter

I'm looking into a shorter version of the theme, perhaps something updated alal Doctor Who.

Listened to it.

Listened to it.

It was quite interesting, but I think so far the reviews are the "weak" link:

The book review sounded weird. I don't know if you edited it somehow, but her speech pattern sounded odd. Keith was talking a bit to fast for my taste, and I have to admit I had to listen twice to the game review until I fully understood what the reviewer wanted to say.

But once you started the "round table", all of you seemed to relax more and the show improved a lot.

Overall a good show. :)

Point Taken

I definitely paused too often during my book review, and I think (but can't prove) that some of my pauses were trimmed down to save space.  And Keith ALWAYS talks too quickly; talking to him is like the verbal equivalent of being run over by the Tasmanian Devil!  In a good way, I mean ...

Hopefully we'll all get a better hang of our volume levels, speaking styles and speeds in future episodes.

Table of contents here would be nice.. combine it with the timestamp for the recording & we can skip you talking and get straight to the interesting stuff.

Left My Player At Home

I have not gotten to listen yet.  Playing it in the office is just not possible.

Maybe after the people leave!
