7: Spotlight: The New Doctor Who

Another place holder for an episode for the archive.  I don't know why I never created some of these in the first place.

thoughts on matt smith (my 2cents)

I appreciate Matt Smith's performance as this new incarnation of the Doctor. I didn't like Smith's first full episode because it felt disjointed. The plot the characters, almost everything felt kind of out of whack. When I saw David Tennant become the new Doctor that was a pretty good episode and it was easier to follow. Matt Smith's episode, not too much.

The other thing concerns the stone angels' episodes in this recent season. I wanted to like them but they just didn't click with me. The first time the stone angels were introduced turned out to be a very good episode("Blink"), but the two recent episodes gave me that same disjointed feeling from the season's first episode.

Overall, I thought besides, some plot points Matt Smith performed very well in his own way as the Doctor. I started watching Doctor Who with Tennant as the Doctor and liked him as the Doctor. And now I'm catching Christopher Eccleston's run as the Doctor for the first time and I'm thinking that all three of these actors have done pretty well playing the Doctor.

Side note: My favorite episodes from Doctor Who in his modern incarnation are: Blink (1st sighting of the stone angels), Midnight (that unknown psychological terrifying creature), Waters of Mars (just because), and the two episodes of the Empty Child when Captain Jack Harkness makes his first appearance.

my two cents on doctor who.

Smith's Run So Far

Many people have compared Smith's Doctor to Troughton's Doctor in many respects.  This is both a good and bad thing.  While there was a certain charm to Troughton, there was also a disconnect at times in the way he dealt with people that comes across with Smith.  It can be a little unnerving.

Also, if Troughton wasn't given perfect material each and every time, he wouldn't rise to the occasion and make it work.  I think Smith does the same thing as this first season of his was incredibly uneven.

I like him, but I can't say I like him the way I like Eccleston or Davison.  They were solid performers who made you believe the most inane plots of RTD, including farting aliens.

PS: Thanks for going all the back to this topic and placing your thoughts here.  (That's not sarcasm.  You could have easily started a whole new topic, and yet you went to the trouble of doing this.  It's appreciated.)

That's what I'm thinking. After seeing Smith's first episode I thought I was the only person who felt that something was kind of off. Then, I listened to the review/roundtable episode and realized that I wasn't the only one getting that weird vibe from the show.

I hope, with the greatest of hope, that Moffat and the other writers bring their A-game for the next season.

And about those farting aliens, that was weird. But Eccleston did well with what he was given.

PS. no problem.
