In Review - The Fury of Firedude

So, how did you feel about the premiere of Lost?  Does John need to get a life or at least a new cartoon to watch?  Tell Orenthal he needs to chill out and pity Andrea for having to put up with the other two here.  Make sure you also rate the episode here.

Snooki is fine.

In case you were wondering.  There was some sort of accident at a Purim party in Manhattan yesterday evening that members of The Jersey Shore attended (what?).  None of them was hurt and Snooki tweeted a picture to assure everyone she was safe.

Tragedy in Chile and this is what all three major New York news outlets report on TV this morning?!?

This world sucks.

cheer up...

In regards to "This world sucks:"  I've listened to every podcast episode of "The Chronic Rift," but haven't watched a single episode of "Jersey Shore."  So, it's possible for the good guys to win sometimes, even if on a small, personal scale!

Further Proof

that this world sucks.  Jersey Shore cast members are getting six figure deals and going to Italy to be drunken idiots and we're off the air.

the whole world doesn't suck, but those two things do!

hope the rift in the Rift heals as soon as possible so you can all get back to enjoying each other's company, even if not for the purpose of entertaining us

Shutter Island

I saw the new Shutter Island movie today (On the day it was released???  Alert the media!)  Anyway, I wanted to tell anyone who heard my book review and was wondering how the film compared to the book that Scorsese, DiCaprio, et al did a very good job with the film adaptation.  Some plot details were cut or changed for the sake of expediency, but the story was still compelling.  The directing was very skillful, so much so that even though I knew what was going to happen, I still jumped several times in my seat.  The twists and turns of the plot had a strong effect on the audience, who gasped and groaned in all the right places.  If you've already read the book, I think that you'll enjoy this treatment of the story ... along with cinematic additions like lots of snow, lots of smoke, and LOTS of rats.  You are forewarned.

Absolutely agreed on Lost and X-Files...

...not to mention (at least in my opinion) the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica.

(um, this was supposed to be a reply to Jay Smith)

Gilligan's Island

Thought I'd share these here since we talked about them on the show.

Ow! My brain!!!

You know, John, I just watched all of those Gilligan's Island-spinoff trailers in order, and I have one thing to say to you.  Actually, the thing I have to say to you is much too rude for these forums, so I'll just say this instead:

DAMN YOU, DREW.  MY BRAIN IS BLEEDING NOW.  ARE YOU SATISFIED???

Oh, and I was going to renew my assertion that people in the 1970's didn't know any better.  But according to IMDB, the travesty known as "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island" was released in 1981.

Oops.

So apparently I have to change my assertion to fit the evidence, which is to say that people in the 1970's AND the 1980's didn't know any better.  About fashion, about television, about logic, and about human decency.  You know, it's not often you find a show that makes the ORIGINAL Gilligan's Island look like "I, Claudius" in comparison.  Did I mention that my brain was bleeding?  Martin Landau?  Scatman Crothers?  George the Robot??? Gah!!!

Jersey Shore, Bruce?

And now something else to melt your mind.

Globetrotters

I've been trying to get a copy of the movie on eBay, but I keep losing to people more desperate for it than me.  I figured it could be my birthday viewing.  TBS used to run all three reunion movies for years, but like Sci-Fi (or Syfy) have abandoned all that odd programming.

Thanks and humbled . . .

I only just now downloaded the podcast.  I am delighted that the Rifties will be dramatizing "James and the Dark Grimoire."  Last year's audio drama was excellent.  I can't wait to se what you do with my story.

Congratulations

I look forward to hearing the final product.

Kevin

We're really looking forward to doing it.  Please send me a mailing address as I never recorded it when you sent me the sound clips for the Holmes Roundtable.  I need to send you your payment and your contract basically stating that you retain all rights to your story.  This is a one off production that we're not going to be making any money off of.

We love train wrecks.

The appeal of Jersey Shore?  It was a masterful marketing plan.   Tits and abs on telegenic assholes.

Batman is getting better.  The more distance I put between BTAM and this, the more I warm to it.  It's still too Adam West for my taste, but it seems to be respectful of the mythology of DC.

Lost, like Smallville, is getting to the point where they are throwing new crap at us to distract from the stuff they can't wrap up.  There are so many things about Lost that suggest they are trying to rewrite the original plan.   Like X-Files before it, these shows rely on the mystery that cannot POSSIBLY be solved to anyone's satisfaction.  Lost is now being forced to show how 6 years of WTF?!? falls together... and the reality is that it probably can't.

And Gilligan's Island sucks.

I felt like smoking a cigarette afterwards!

That ad for the "Lovely Ladies" podcast in the first ad break of the show...  You need to post a warning to male listeners to put on a condom before listening...  I think it may have made me pregnant.

Firedude...

That was the first episode of Batman B&B that I enjoyed.  I liked Firstorm.  I liked the Bat-trinity.

Musical?

The Music Meister didn't cut it for you?

I admit I haven't seen it.  I

I admit I haven't seen it.  I saw the commercials for it (over and over) which made it out to sound like the dumbest of dumb things in the Dumb Hall of Fame.

John S. Drew's picture

Funny

Nobody ever looks at musicals and thinks about how dumb they really are.  I mean, really, thugs in West Side Story start dancing and singing in the middle of a knife fight?  When they suggested a musical for Buffy, I thought it was a pretty dumb idea.  Now, you may question the setup because there has to be a setup when music has never been a part of the Buffy universe, at least not in the case of the regulars, but the songs were great and moved the story along.  The same can be said for "The Music Meister".  I have embedded the episode for your viewing pleasure.  Take a moment and watch and let me know.

The brilliance of “Once More With Feeling”

The Buffy musical episode was brilliant in Whedon’s use of songs to express the character’s emotions. In particular “Under Your Spell,” which on the surface sounds like a love song filled with love song clichés. BUT practically every line has a double meaning that isn’t about love but rather Willow’s inappropriate use of magic on Tara. Tara is literally “under your spell” and “something just isn’t right.” Plus, man, some of those tunes were catchy.

Agreed. That WAS very entertaining.

Even though I'm not a comic geek like the rest of youse guys (and thus can't recognize every single character), I still thought it was a lot of fun.  Re: the discussion of whether or not Diedrich Bader can sing, I figure the answer is probably yes.  If not, he can fake it reasonably well.  Remember he spent a lot of years on the Drew Carey Show, and they did a bunch of musical episodes.

Jay_Smith's picture

Let me clarify,

I'm not saying the CONCEPT of a musical is bad.  I've seen it done well enough.  It was just my dislike of the episodes I saw combined with a really awful trailer.

Based on the last few episodes I watched, it's worth giving it another shot.

One Correction

I listed Babylon 5 as Orenthal's complete DVD series, when he is talking about Farscape.  I don't know what I was thinking, but I have corrected it.  It sure was a bitch to find the complete Babylon 5 series for the Amazon store.
