Bad art we love

Andrea's mention of the Villiage People's magnum opus Can't Stop the Music (Best. Movie. Directed. By. Rhoda's. Mom. Ever.) brought to mind all the other movies, music, and books that I both love and hate.  Perhaps you could do a show devoted to these examples of bad art.  Perhaps listeners (and/or some invited professionals) could leave phone messages or e-mail you MP3s (limited to 2 minutes or so) talking about their favorite artistic obsessions that they know are bad for them.

Anyone else remember the Sgt. Pepper movie with the Bee Gees?  Steve Martin is Maxwell Edison!  George Burns is Mr. Kite!

Bad Art vs. Guilty Pleasure

It all depends on how you define art.  Take my case, for instance.  Most people would look at seaQuest DSV, as a load of crap, but I found merit in it and enjoyed watching it every week.  I can say the same for the original The Bionic Woman.  (And it certainly had more going for it than seaQuest DSV)

Would this be a Roundtable discussion where people would have to defend their definition of art as such example as you have stated are brought up?  I could see this being a yearly event then as different people are brought in to promote and defend their love of art.

Redefining "Art"

At first I was like ... wait .. you mean like that "dogs playing poker" painting?  And then I read the rest of your post and I got the jist of what you were saying.  The word "ART" threw me, though.  Orenthal used to be the bad-movie king of our group, but over the years I have clawed my way up to that spot.  Forcing my friends to watch movies like Can't Stop the Music, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, and Sextette have all been steps on my climb to power.  I recently showed them a little picture called Space Amoeba (aka Yog: Monster From Space) which was hilariously bad and featured a giant squid that walks on land ... and yet that wasn't nearly as painful as watching Liberace singing, dancing, and romancing women (!!!) in Sincerely Yours.

Back in our public access days, we had an episode on B-Movies in which I wasn't nearly as much of a fan as I am now.  And now we do have Jay's "Guilty Pleasures" segments on the podcast.  But it's a topic that definietly could be revisited in a future roundtable.  Maybe we could substitute B-Movies / Guilty Pleasures for one of the topics for which we're having trouble finding panelists.  Somehow, I think that if we had an Awful Stuff We Love roundtable, we would have no shortage of panelists.  I also think that if we talked about ALL the awful stuff we love, the conversation would be several hours long!
