Orenthal?

I was just wondering what the deal was with him. He talks up the website on the show, which is great for you, but I don't see much of him on here. Everyone else on your show makes an appearance, even if it's to plug something, but at least it's something.

I like Orenthal. I think he's one of your stronger links on the show. I know I don't post as often as I used to, but could I please make a request for more appearances here by him? He's no shy around the internet as shown with his multiple postings a day on Livejournal.

I'm not trying to start waves here, so please don't write me again. It's just for someone who has such a strong presence on your show, he's noticibly missing on the website.

I Concur

I agree with Judy.  I don't think anyone is asking you to put so much yourself into this the way you do your Live Journal blog, I think it's just a matter of making your presence here known.

You said one thing in your "3 things" post that caught my attention. You said you "work" on your Facebook page.  It's a social networking site.  It's meant to be a way to connect with people.  It's not the same as a blog, where I understand you've become somewhat of a celebrity there and that requires some "work" in order to keep up that status.

It got me thinking how this would make a great Roundtable discussion.  Social networking with a possible subtopic of how such networking creates celebrities in the way reality television does.  Perhaps for the second quarter of episodes as we have the first quarter locked down?

My bad...

Actually you misinterpreted what I said and that's where text fails in terms of face to face communication. I didn't mean work as in "job", but as in "effort" and it was mostly referring to the Rift and HG World.

When I said "between working on the Rift, HG World, FB and LJ", FB and LJ had nothing to do with the verb "working".  That's my fault as I phrased it badly.  The social networking things stand on their own.  They aren't work, but they do eat up bandwidth.  They are fun and individual outlets that I have come to enjoy, but just like with Mass Effect 2, which I love, they take time.  And something gave.  Actually Mass Effect 2 is a big part of that too as I've been playing...A LOT.  If you aren't playing it, you need to play.

But I am going to take you to task for one thing you said John.  I don't like the "celeb" thing.  I don't work at it.  I don't put effort into it.  It's not something I cultivate.  Not trying to keep up any sort of status.  Never have.  Never will.  That whole "  It's not the same as a blog, where I understand you've become somewhat of a celebrity there and that requires some "work" in order to keep up that status." made me shudder uncomfortably, because it's based upon a misconception.  In the end, I'd still be writing this way to 10 people or 1000.

LJ is the place where I get to be creative and expressive.  I'm not a writer, I don't make art.  I'm not a photographer.   I have a blog.

It's my place to express.  I'm just talking.  I'm a natural extrovert and FB and LJ are the tools I use to do so with LJ allowing for greater expression.  But in the end all I do it talk.  And I've been fortunate to make a few interpersonal connections along the way.  But in the end, it's all just talking.

Heck, even on the Rift, my segment is about talking.  I'm just glad that there are people in whatever forum listening to what I have to say.  But everyone here is right.  I need to talk here more.

However, one issue is that many of the things I end up wanting to talk about here...end up as Pop Fiendish segments.  In fact, I have this whole thing I am DYING to talk about, but it's going to be my next Pop Fiendish.   And then I'm struggling for another idea, which either ends up being another Pop Fiendish or dying on the vine.  I need to figure that one out.

Doesn't change the fact that I need to talk here more.

Granted

All right, I stand corrected on one count, that you view your status on LJ as celebrity, but it doesn't change the fact that that's what you are over there.  You're a rock star compared to myself and many others.  Hell, on last year's Match Game episode (new episode coming this Friday) I introduced you as "from Live Journal, Orenthal Hawkins".  You may feel uncomfortable with the term, but it's what you are over there.  You have groupies and a fan club there.  So, when you used the incorrect word of "work", I took it from there.  Mia culpa.

I have to correct you though.  In today's Internet environment, blogs hold as much weight among readers as a magazine would.  There are people publishing entries from their blogs as books.  You say this is your outlet for being creative and what does one hope to create when they are being creative, crap?  No, you're creating art.  You may not look at it that way yourself, but it's what's drawn so many people to you.

I'll bet, if there was an interested party out there, a publisher could cull the best of your pieces together and come up with a book that people would buy.

Hmmmmm.....

Now you got me thinking....

Woof!

Sorry, if I stirred anything up here, Orenthal. I was just curious why your presence here wasn't as pronounced. I really like you and before you suggest I check out your blog or Facebook, I don't subscribe to either of those.  In fact, I really don't frequent many websites. I came here because of my love for the old show.

Anyway, I look forward to hearing you on the podcast in the future and hope to see you around here.

Everything is cool.  No

Everything is cool.  No worries.

I'll try to do better by everyone here.

I think...

Riftians would like you, Orenthal, to comment on and post Rift-related things.

I prefer "Riftees" or

I prefer "Riftees" or "Rifters".

Ooooooh "Rifters" is awesome.  Let's go with that.

And yes, I need to talk here more.

I did have one thing I was going to post today about Mass Effect 2 as I wanted to know who played it and who liked it.  Off to post.

Yeah, but...

Yeah, but if you don't make an appearance or reply to things that are posted here, you're denying your fans (and they're out there, I'm sure) the very experience you claim this website is for. I have been slowly going through the website and commenting on things posted from the past. (There's a lot to go through.) I just posted a number of responses and all you replied to is this one. It's just odd from someone as verbose and opinionated as you. My two cents.

3 things...

1.) I was having a problem getting all of my notifications as Gmail had been sending some of them to SPAM.

2.) Badnwidth.  Over the past month and change my work projects have heated up (I'm an independent IT consultant) and between working on the Rift and HG World and Lj and FB something gave and it was the site.  I need to put more effort into that.  But at least I did prompt John to put the Old Time Radio Station up and give this place a little extra (pop) culture.  :D

3.) I make no promises, but I'll try and get better about posting and replying here.

Thanks again,

- O.

Notifications

I have never had a problem with Gmail sending my notifications to spam, but I'll let Dave know about it.

Of course, you could always visit the site more often.  That would solve the problem temporarily. ;)

Thanks.  I appreciate the compliment.

John has made similar comments.  It might just be that I hesitate to use the Rift website as a personal "dumping" ground.

I'll work on it.

Again, thanks.

Dumping ground?

I'm sorry. I'm just curious, what do you mean by dumping ground? Are you having problems or something that you don't want to tell us? You seem pretty verbose on your blog. Anyway, I hope everything's all right.

My blog is a personal space

My blog is a personal space and when I'm talking about my life and the things happening to me or strike my fancy, that's a lot of stuff runing through my head.

I don't necessarily want to drop that much in this space.  It should be a much more controlled space for fans to be fans.  That's all.

But I do appreciate the concern.  Means a great deal.  Thank you very much for that.

Peace,

- O.
