I blogged about it here, but you find out all about the extras by visiting my personal blog because it's way too long to stick in a forum comment.
Chekov...
That actor is actually Russian. It is possible he over-Russianed up his own accent.
Initial Thoughts
Just got in from seeing it.
It's not as spectacular as everyone is making it out to be, but it's not bad either. It does what Abrams set out to do, make this bloated franchise more accessable to the average person.
There are a lot of nice touches for the uber-fan, including a brief appearance of the race that Arrax of the animated series belonged to. I also loved how Kirk ate an apple during the Kobiyoshi Maru scenario, a clear nod to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
I was most impressed by Pine and Urban. Urban totally channeled DeForest Kelley and yet managed to make the role his own. Pine injected just enough of Shatner's swagger to make it not seem as though he were mimicking him. Although, I could have sworn it was Shatner on the screen in the ending when he said, "Bones!, Buckle Up!"
I was not impressed by Quinto. This is completely a failing of mine. I am usually pretty good with not stereotyping actors, but unfortunately Quinto will always be Syler of Heroes, not because he was any good, but because his character was what drove me from the show. I really hated that they played up Chekov's accent. If they were going to rewrite history, why did they not ignore this totally stupid part? The people who played Uhura and Sulu were adaquate. I thought Simon Pegg was great as Scotty during the manic scenes, but the accent slipped when he was more subdued.
I'm glad I went to see this, but this movie didn't reignite my love affair with Trek, the way Iron Man did for the Marvel comic. It was a fun popcorn movie, but that's about it. In fact, I feel like popping in my DVD of The Wrath of Khan.

"What? Too much?"
Uhura
What I like about the way her character was written is that is shows how damn smart she is and how important an excellent communications officer is and not as window dressing.
But she was also nice window
But she was also nice window dressing. :)
two minor nits
Quoth John: "Quinto will always be Skyler of Heroes,"
That's Sylar, not "Skyler."
Quoth John again: "this didn't reignite my love affair with Trek, the way Iron Man did."
Iron Man reignited your love affair with Trek? Neat trick, that! (Sorry, I'm on antecedent patrol...... ;) )

Thank You
For both catches. :^)
Trekin' It Up
Great pacing, good sotry.
Saw it Thursday night.
I saw Star Trek: The Motion Picture with a McDonald's Happy Meal Klingon Battle Cruiser in my lap. I was 9. If the 2 hours had been COMPLETELY composed of Jerry Goldsmith's sweeping score and long, lingering shots of the new Enterprise blazing through space and V'Ger storming through the cosmos, I would have still felt the same sense of wonder I felt seeing Star Wars on a Drive-In screen under a starry sky on a summer night in 1977.
Star Trek is American modern mythology. I wrote about this over on my blog, but essentially 40 years of increasing creative miopia killed it for me. Nemesis was an insulting, lazy film with less going for it than one of the latter Police Academy sequels.
It was only a matter of time before the series rebooted. Spreadsheets trump Art. After seeing it last night I must say:
GO SEE IT. GO BOLDLY.
It isn't your comfortable 40 year old universe. It's strange and it is new. It has its flaws, but then even Wrath of Khan isn't a perfect film. But like Wrath of Khan, it is one hell of a ride.
