Batman: The Brave and the Bold

John S. Drew's picture

So, based on the bashing Hawk gave it in a recent episode of The Rift, I had to check it out.  It must once again be my high threshold for the stupid or perhaps I'm missing the new Knight Rider series, but I like this show.  One of the writers on the show, Michael Jelenic, put it best when he said on a recent episode of Slice of Sci-Fi how this series is like watching the old Adam West Batman series as a kid.  You have to view this series that way.  As kids, we thought Adam West's Batman was the be-all and end-all of super heroes.  If you take this show with the same humongous grain of salt, you can enjoy it.

I particularly like the Blue Beetle.  Now, he's not the same character as in the Justice League Unlimited comics back in the early 90's, is he?

I do not like the Green Arrow's costume and I really dislike that they play Aquaman as though he were Hercules of Marvel's The Avengers.

I've only seen three episodes so far, but they've all dealt with larger-than-Batman villians, either toxic or other-worldly.  I was disappointed that the Blue Beetle episode, which featured Clock King at the beginning, was not about the Clock King.

I'm curious to know if anyone else has seen it, or if Hawk's impression of it has changed with further viewings as he says he continues to watch it despite not liking it.

Why Aren't You Watching This?!?

It just doesn't get any better than this, a tribute episode to both the Batman and Superman animated series of the 90s.

You did notice the voices of

You did notice the voices of Kevin Conroy, Clancy Brown and Dana Delany for the DC Animated character analogs they are most famous for, right?

Oddly Enough

I missed Conroy.  I thought that Baider was trying to do a bad impersonation of him.   Weird.

Just a little sample from the episode to whet your appetite.

The Music Meister

The best episode of the series yet.  If you get a chance, catch it in repeats on Cartoon Network.  Neil Patrick Harris continues to flex his musical tones as the villain, the Music Meister.  His hypnotic voice makes everyone break into song.  There's another tip to the Adam West series as Shame and King Tut appear in a collage of villains in Arkham.

"Legends of the Dark-Mite"

All right, if you haven't watched an episode yet, or if you don't like the show, at least give this week's episode a look.  First, it's written by Paul Dini.  Second, it features Bat-Mite and Ace, Batman's dog.  Third, they make nods not only to the 60s series, but to Frank Miller's Dark Knight, the movie series, and Batman: The Animated Adventures.  This is a must see.  It's great.

pssst....

Dark Knight was Frank Miller, not Alan Moore. (Alan did The Killing Joke....)

Caught Up

Have seen every episode now except for the Christmas one and the new one that premieres either this week or next.  The last episode I saw was another nod to the old television series as Batman and Green Arrow stop a prison escape by a group of prisoners that included The Archer, Book Worm, Clock King, Ma Parker, Shame, Marsha, Queen of Diamonds, Egg Head, and King Tut.  Very well done.

And Paul Rubens as Bat-Mite.  Nothing is sacred with this show.  Cool!

Aquaman

He's growing on me.  At first, I wasn't happy with his characterization being similar to Hercules from Marvel's The Avengers, only dimmer, but he must be wearing me down.  I caught the episode where Batman helps him stop an overthrow by Ocean Master and the destruction of Atlantis by Black Manta.  In it, Aquaman is telling Batman stories of his various victories and how he names the stories.

"I call that the story of how I defeated the Mermen." or something as silly.

He makes water bubbles and his aquatic telepathy sounds just like it did in The Super Friends.

Am I the only one watching this show? Have I found my new Knight Rider?

Batman Teams Up With Joker

Great episode and shows that this is a continuation of the 60's Batman series as Batman reminisces about some of the death traps he's gotten out of, all of which were from the series, including the giant clam!

Kamandi

All right, now this is cool.  Batman teaming up with Kamandi, The Last Boy on Earth.  That seals its fate as cool with me.
