Frank Conniffwas taken aback when, in the middle of this weekend's Cinematic Titanic live performance, Kanye West stormed the stage, grabbed our microphones, and told the audience that Rifftrax is much better.
(You'd have to have watched the MTV VMA's or seen someone's blog in order to get the reference. For the record, in my case, it was the latter.)

So I'm listening to Geek Radio Daily yesterday and the host, Billy Flynn comments on how MST3K got him through his darkest days in the early 90's. I guess the show does haev a strange healing power. We might have a healthier alternative to Prozac here.

It is very true that the show has the ability to bring people out of their funk. I spent a lot of the mid-to-late 90s fighting depression and one of my lifelines was a weekly viewing of MST with my room mates. There was something about Joel's boyish humor and the good-natured (never mean) riffs about the movies they viewed, and the comfortable, cartoon colors that made it fun to watch.
At the time, before MST was all over The Intarwebs and on home video, it felt like "our" show, a great secret that we could share with friends. This may sound weird, but sharing MST with someone and watching them see an episode like "Mitchell" or "Gamera" for the first time, it felt like you were letting them into a secret club.
I know quite a few people who used MST to get through some really bad times. I think that it helps to know that - no matter how bad it seems - at least you're not Coleman Francis or Joe Don Baker.
Great show as usual. Andrea acquitted herself well at the helm. Long live the Rift.
PS: Recently, I was talking with a friend about various direct-to-DVD series, and he mentioned that he was a total Cinematic Titanic fan. I had no idea what he was talking about. Of course, he told me all about it and showed me the website (blogs, clips, images, etc.). I've since introduced him to the The Chronic Rift website; he's going to love this edition!
I never really got into the habit of watching MST3K when it was on, although I did like catching the little skits and interactions that had nothing to do with the movies they were showing. But it was delightful to hear Andrea discuss her obvious love of the show, and getting one of the actors from the program to appear on the Rift was a real nice coup.
This show has never, ever, passed my eyes, so to begin with I was a little "huh?"
Well, really, I was a LOT "Huh"
Andrea's singing was a nice touch, and very amusing. It's far better than John's (sorry John, but you ask for feedback, what do you expect??) Keith's audio setup is better, but there's still a noticeable quality difference between Andrea's crystal clear. It doesn't detract too much, but it's there. (I'm sorry Keith, I keep bitching about it don't I?, It's just coz I wanna hear what you've got to say mate)
I didn't get a huge amount of what was said, but the way it was talked about, particularly Andrea's obvious fondness, made me take a trip to Amazon.co.uk to see if there's a Region 2 version of the show. Apparently there's not!!! Who do I have to complain to? The only alternative I have (because my DVD player is AKA Eliza the PS3 and is region locked to 2) is to download the episodes via Torrent. Not a good thing!
I have discovered that there is MST3K on Youtube, so I'll probably spend some time tomorrow checking that out. Yay, an exciting new obsession!
Jay's segment was OK, but perhaps needs a little more humour, or more of his personality injected. It came across as just a little too dry.
Above all, the show is still worth downloading, and whilst I didn't quite get as much out of the show as others (particularly Andrea), it was still fun to listen too.
Yeah, I realized that MST3K might be something American based, but if it got your interest and you're looking, then we can say we hooked another. I believe you can also download episodes off iTunes.
And if you still found enjoyment in the episode, even if you didn't entirely get it, then that makes us like MST3K as per the discussion. Nice.

This was a great episode. Andrea, you clearly have a love for this show and it shows in your guidance of the conversation, making sure it didn't sway off track. Dan Persons sounds like a, excuse the pun, personable fellow. Glad to see that the last episode was just a fluke and not going to become the norm. Looking forward to hearing Michael Burstein's interview in two weeks.
There was a ten second gap in the episode that I have now corrected, but Podomatic is being stubborn about uploading the corrected version. Please be patient as I try to get the situation fixed. Thanks.

That was my sigh of relief that my first roundtable hosting gig is over, and that it went as well as I'd hoped. I think I might have been a little wound up after a really long day of lugging bags of goodies around the New York Comic Con, then going home, then going to work, then going home again and I was just about ready to drop. But maybe some exhaustion was just what I needed to keep my nerves at a minimum. I think the fact that we had Frank available for exactly one hour helped to keep the conversation focused, because we could have gone on and and on and on if left unchecked. Because Lord knows we can talk for ages about MST3K.
Anyway, I hope you guys have as much fun listening to this episode as we did making it!
The timing on the episode was perfect. Frank might actually think we're some sort of professionals the way we had it all wrapped up in under an hour. ;)

Just heard the episode and it was really nice to hear Andrea not only sounding so excited about the show, but SINGING. It was a high-energy, positive, almost fanboy/girl episode that I am SO glad I wasn't part of (at least for the interview section). With Frank I would have used my keen journalist instincts to ask probing questions like "Frank, what color is your world? Is it the same as the sunset in heaven?" and "I bought a few strands of your forelock on eBay...would you be my BFF? And as a followup, Does all that Awesome hurt sometimes?" and "I'm not usually one who goes for the guys, but your lips look SO kissable. May I..?"
And now you understand why they put me in the basement with the zombies this week.
My USB mic went south halfway through the recording process and I had to use the microphone from our Rock Band 2 set. It had great sound, but I had a hell of a time trying to get it to match the sound of my Logistics USB headset. John, you did an excellent job showhorning the MST subject into the Zombie-theme MGP. I will buy you a bag of Logic Pretzels next time we meet.
