Not a direct relation as far

Not a direct relation as far as I know, but whenever I hear about her movies I always listen for her name.  So I was amused when her name never came up...

American Teen

For reasons that will become obvious soon, I'm amused that Andrea praised American Teen but never mentioned the name of the filmmaker...

Hmmm

MAnother good show.

Keith's audio was spot on this time  YAY

The Knight Rider discussion was also spot on.  Whilst the Pilot remembered it's roots, the new show sucked to begin with, and the KITT/KARR fight?  SUCKED BEYOND THE COUNTING.   Hopefully, the reboot of the reboot might work, but not holding my breath.

I've always been a fan of Carrie Fisher, and despite my interest, I've consistently failed to read anything of hers.  I'm a BAD fan.

The Tater's awards were ok (The Annual TV Entertainment Review), but could have been longer and more through out.

The David Mack interview was a bit difficult for me, since I'm really not familiar with the Trek fiction side.  *dodges hurled books*   I probably would start reading, if I knew what order they came in. :(  I was a bit more interested in the premise of his own story, and I might take a look at that when it emerges from hiding here. One question though, John, what happened to your voice when you thanked David for speaking to Keith.  Did you slam your testicles in a drawer? :)

The Pop Culture fiend spot went over my head a bit, but that's OK. :)

I agree with the moratorium on John's singing. :D  please don't???  EVER??

WTF?  I get a mention?  *red face*

Trivia Question??  *Whimper* I never saw Enterprise, and I'm going to be a nice guy and not google it. Let a real Trek fan grab the great prize.

Looking forward to the next episode, although I've "never" seen an episode of MST3K  :(

I think I'll also take a trip up to Cardiff this week or next and see what's happening in Doctor Who land up there.   Any requests on location photographs? :D

Thanks for the episode guys.

Wow!

Jay, I love you and I mean that in the bromance kind of way. But if you think that this episode was not a conflict of interest in having Keith interview Dave Mack, well, even heroes stumble.

The beer drinking, buddy buddyness of the interview was unnerving to begin with. I was looking forward to hearing more about Mack's original novel, but instead I was treated to a "Why my latest Trek work is great" discourse. The poor original novel was sandwiched between that and the jokes about the  old Trek novel cronies being too familiar with each other for their audiences' appreciation. (Unless your audience is only those folks at the Trek boards who know exactly where the Trek books are located at B&N and don't know that the original science fiction works are in alphabetical order.)

This was followed by Keith's own plug for his FOLLOW-UP novel. This was a bloody infomercial for Simon and Shuster, plain and simple. What's next? Keith shilling for his girlfriend? He's already doing it for his blog on this site.

This was not an objective episode, something I could clearly see in the episodes of the old tv show you have posted so far and in the past podcast episodes.

I see you have a media-tie in novel episode coming up in a few months. Is that going to be a love fest for the format with Keith pouting, "It is TOO real literature," or are you going to have someone from the viewpoint of media-tie ins are a waste of time or whatever?

You sold out this time, guys. Right down to the giveaway. I'm hoping this was just a stumble and not the course you're setting in order to get listeners.

hmm

I'm not sure who else I would have had do the David Mack interview.  Keith knows the Trek literature scene inside out, and I "Like" the inside knowledge stuff, even if I don't follow it.   To me, the giveaway was fine, a interviewed subject offered a prize, and that's a damn nice idea.  I don't feel there was a sell out in any way.  Hell, I'd like to see this happen with every big interview, a competition to win something from the interviewed subject. Maybe next time, a MST3K give away (not sure what there is along those lines though, and obviously, it could get expensive)

He Would Have Worked

There was nothing wrong with Keith having knowledge of the inside scene, I guess. But just to put things in perspective, this was supposed to be an interview of David Mack, but Keith couldn't keep himself out of it by plugging some Trek work of his while talking to the man! I just got the impression from listening to this that this was not about promoting David, but rather the Trek book line and thus Keith himself. It was a little too self serving and that irritates me.

The Interview

I will give you that it was not the best moment to bring up Keith's work, but in getting to this point in your argument, this really isn't about the work, but about Keith himself.

I would ask then that if you have any further issues in this vein you take them to email and not air them out in a public form.

Addressing a few of these points ...

Okay, let me address some of these issues as cautiously, carefully, and diplomatically as possible.

We are at the beginning of our podcast venture, which means we don't have people beating down our door to be interviewed on our show just yet (give us a few more months).  So most of our current interviewees are people we already know either through The Chronic Rift TV show or in real life.  Jay is correct in pointing out that since Keith goes out to conventions more than any of us, he's ideal for us to say, "Hey, while you're there promoting your own stuff, could you also get an interview or two for the podcast?"  We will be acquiring more interviews in the coming months as several of our hosts are lining up interviews with other authors/celebrities.  Keith is also probably the ideal person to interview a Trek author simply because he's read more Trek fiction than (I think) the rest of us put together.  There's a line somewhere between interviewing a friend and acting like Barbara Walters and trying to make the person cry, but I don't pretend to know where that line should be, exactly.  I also wished there had been more of a discussion of Mack's latest book because I was more interested in that than in his Trek books, but that's my (our) personal preference.  Perhaps there are Trek fans who will be disappointed that he didn't talk ENOUGH about the Destiny books.

I, too, am interested to see how the media-tie-in novel episode will turn out.  The war between the fans and detractors of these books is much more bloodthirsty than I had originally imagined.  Stay tuned, indeed.

I am now going to step back a few paces before I get hit with too much shrapnel ...

Much to Think About

First and foremost, thank you for taking the time to respond to the episode.  It is appreciated.

In regards to the overall interview, I don't know how much more David could tell you about his upcoming novel, The Calling, without giving the whole story away.  I think he whetted the appetite and I for one am looking forward to reading it.  He is a Trek author as well and the novels are currently available, so to not touch on them would be out of line to David, who wants to promote ALL his work.  As for the cronyism, I don't think the swapping stories is anymore out of line than interviews with Hollywood celebrities or sports people who talk about people they know.

Yes, Keith plugged his follow-up novel, in the PLUGS section.  I specifically set up that portion of the show, not only to allow Keith to bring up his upcoming releases, but to showcase anything we on the staff want the world to know.  I have utilized it to promote my Dome audios and Judy her photo exhibits.  Since Keith was promoting his upcoming works, it made perfect sense to bring it up at that point in the show.

I take your point about the upcoming media tie-in episode, your cheap shot at Keith notwithstanding.  I only ask that you wait and listen to the episode before you jump to conclusions.

The giveaway, a generous offer from S&S and Dave Mack, ties in perfectly with the episode.  On the off chance I can get a 25th anniversary MST3K set for the next episode, should I not offer it for fear that it would be considererd shilling?

Again, I appreciate the time you took to comment, but I don't think you're looking at the whole picture when it comes to our show.

John

I have to admit, you're right. I guess, as a non media tie in fan, I was annoyed that the original work was given less time than the Trek work. I'll know to fast forward in the future so as not to annoy myself.

What cheap shot are you referring to?

And I guess you work with what is offered to you in regards to giveaways.

I'm going to continue listening, but please understand, I have friends who told me this was a great talk show back in the day that rose above the usual public access nonsense and fanboy twaddle. My screen name is because I don't nickle and dime everything, I get right to the point. If it walks like a duck, well, this episode quacked, in my opinion.

the cheap shot

Since you asked which cheap shot John was referring to, I quote you:

"Is that going to be a love fest for the format with Keith pouting, 'It is TOO real literature,'"

You want to criticize my interviewing style, knock yourself out. You want to question the professionalism of the Rift staff for having me conduct the interview, fine (though I'm genuinely unclear as to why objectivity is a necessary criterion for an interview with an artist). But ad hominem attacks and personal insults do nothing to bolster your argument, and do much to prevent your criticisms from being taken seriously, which is an injustice to you and to those criticisms.

I guess, as a non media tie

I guess, as a non media tie in fan, I was annoyed that the original work was given less time than the Trek work.

So let's see: There is one original novel by him upcoming and about half a dozen tie in - novels recently released or announced. So if I understand you correctly he should spend all (or most of) the time talking about the one project?

And actually I think it got featured very well and as far as I have seen so far what he said in the interview about the novel was much more than he has let out anywhere else.

But what do I know and since I'm reading tie-in novels you most likely don't give a damn about my opinion anyway.

A miniscule error

Um, not to question our "fearless leader," but it's the 20th anniversary set of MST3K, not the 25th.  And it's a super-duper-cool thing, I might add :)

How Do You Know?

How do you know that I didn't mean the 25th anniversary set?  I'm a damn good producer.  ;)

Damn it

are you playing with your TARDIS again??  You'll wear out the batteries at this rate.

Keith?

Keith interviewed Dave Mack? I don't know as I haven't listened to the episode yet, but isn't that a conflict of interest? They work together. You really should have had someone else on the show interview him. It's not like you're short for hosts.  ;)

Jay_Smith's picture

Keith gives good chat.

I'm not sure it's really a conflict of interest.  I see what you're saying and I'd be interested in your thoughts after you listen to the show.  Keith is very good at interviewing people and he has an encyclopedic knowledge of various people and materials that allows him to ask smart questions.  The rest of us could do the job just as well, but it would require more prep time and special arrangements to meet by phone and all that stuff.  I think Keith just had an excellent opportunity to talk to an exciting talent about upcoming projects that we didn't want to pass up. Keith also travels to conventions much more than the rest of us, so he can meet and interview people we otherwise wouldn't have time to bring to the show.

I'll tell ya what I think was CLOSE to a conflict of interest: I REALLY wanted to interview TV's Frank for the upcoming MST3K anniversary show, but I know I would be such a giggly fangirl that I declined to participate.  I'll probably poke my head in at the top of the show, say something incredibly pedantic like "Oh Frank, you're so amazingly awesome." and then sit through the taping with my mic on Mute.  I know there's no way I could do an objective interview.  Keith, on the other hand, isn't impressed that much by anybody, so I think we're good. :)

In the future you'll notice we mix it up with different hosts interviewing a wide range of guests, so let us know if you think it's getting a little too "Access Hollywood", nose-to-buttcrack in its presentation.
