In Review: Harlan Ellison Said to Me

John S. Drew's picture

This episode clocks in as one of the longest in the show's history, but there is a great deal to cover as the new year begins.  In addition to book, podcast, movie, comic book, and television reviews, there is a great deal of name dropping in this episode.  John is joined by Rift movie reviewer and Mighty Movie Podcast and Cinefantastique Online host, Dan Persons and It Has Come to My Attention host, Kevin Lauderdale for this spectacular.

Video time

Billy Squire "Rock Me Tonite": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR0j7sModCI

And for you youngsters, "that A-Ha video" that we kept referencing was "Take On Me""  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV11Xbc914

It didn't actually win Video of the Year at the 1986 VMAs, but it did win six other awards including Best New Artist, Best Concept Video, and Viewer's Choice.  That year's VotY was "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straights -- which does indeed rock:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAD6Obi7Cag

The biggest surprise that year was the winner Best Overall Performance in a Video went to Mick Jagger and David Bowie in "Dancing in the Street, a celebration of strange pants choices:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G4jnaznUoQ&ob=av2e .  I can't belive that Rober Palmer's "Addicted to Live" lost to that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcATvu5f9vE&ob=av2e

Word to your mother.

a few comments

I have been catching up on The Big Bang Theory on DVD, so I referred to Sara Gilbert as recurring because she is where I am on DVD. You guys were right, she isn't really part of the cast anymore. (Though it's open to bring her back, since she still does work at Cal Tech....) I've caught episodes here and there that post-date my watch-through. Melissa Rauch only just started as a recurring character, and I've only caught bits and pieces of Mayim Bialik.

Dan: Saying "Harry Mudd will always be Roger C. Carmel" when you're talking about the JJ Abrams Star Trek that has already recast seven of the most iconic characters in popular culture is just silly.

Icons

seven of the most iconic characters in popular culture

Ok, I'm being pedantic here: I won't argue your point but I think you're stretching a bit.  I'll give you Kirk and Spock, but if Chekov is in the top 500 "most iconic characters in popular culture" I'll eat my hat.

Having said *that*.... a spotlight episode counting down "the most iconic pop culture characters" would be a very cool episode guaranteed to (like most "top 10 lists") generate a fair amount of brawling.  :)

...and another thing.....

The comment that the producters of BBT are "backing off" from Sheldon's having Asperger's is laughable. They'd be more convincing if they said they were "backing off" from Leonard being near-sighted, or Howard being Jewish.
