Episode Two - The Evolution of Horror

So, it clocked in at over two hours.  Was it two hours of Geek Goodness or Geek madness?

I've gone back to the

I've gone back to the beginning (of the podcast, that is) to listen to your show.  I must say, you guys are quickly becoming one of my favorite podcasts in my podcatcher!

Great show thus far, and I've only listened to two episodes.

Oh, and in response to some comments on episode two ... Pat Troughton was one of th greatest Doctors, but not the best overall.  This all coming from a guy who got hooked on Doctor Who when he saw the Christopher Eccleston episodes ... then decided to be quite insane and Netflixed absolutely all the Doctor Who DVDs available and went about tracking down other, non-released episodes in ... ahem ... other ways.

That all began in October 2007, and I watched every single Doctor Who episode I could get my hands on.  Yes, all of them.  I live in Kansas, okay?  What else am I supposed to do?  Watch grass grow?

I'm about to start listening to the Doctor Who episode, and am looking forward to it!  Fantastic program thus far, gents!

Great show, guys.  I had a

Great show, guys.  I had a blast.  Discussion was lively and entertaining!  Joseph was a great guest; I'm definitely picking up GARBAGE MAN after I finish MEATJudy, your knowledge and warm wit kept us on our toes, and John, you kept things moving nicely, raising some challenging questions along the way.

Notes to self:

  • Next time, bring notes to keep from rambling, alternatively, bring a gong for others to use (honestly, someone reel me in next time -- if there is a next time).
  • Don't digress.  John asked a perfectly good question about what horror movie first hooked us.  It started out okay, but then the wheels came off.
  • Don't hijack discussion with questions for other guests, let the hosts, you know, host.

Other than that, I think we rocked.  I felt at home with your group and enjoyed myself thoroughly.  Thanks for having me.

The rest of the show was a treat.  Orenthal's RULES were  fun -- unfortunately, we can't determine trash until after we've plunked down our hard-earned cash.

Thanks to Andrea's Greywalker review, I've resolved a Christmas gift dilemma; this series will please some friends who are partial to this kind of story.

The Spider-Man issue in which Mary Jane makes the deal with the 'devil' was itself an interesting read, but I agree that it was one of the worst decisions Marvel has made coming out of the already landscape-changing Civil War (and I liked this plot better when it was House of M, thank-you-very-much).  Casada really needs to move on.

Rhymphile's DVD review was equitable, but I've no intention of wasting money on this; the movie was a disappointment.

Derrick's Appaloosa review saddened me; I usually don't read/listen to reviews before I see a movie but I wanted to listen to all of the Rift.  I like good westerns and this looked good.  I'll still give it a go and leave a comment with my thoughts.

I'm not really a gamer -- and I'm absolutely NOT into 'shoot'em'ups' -- but I do enjoy MYST-type games.  The Resident Evil series has intrigued me, however, and I've got gamer friends who stand by it.  Also, the idea of 'playing' a horror movie is very appealing.  Corey gave an enthusiastic review; a 9.5 rating says it all, doesn't it?

Can't wait for next month's Doctor Who show!  Tennant is my favorite.  Tom Baker, I loved as a child.  I never watched any other Doctor until Eccleston and I became an instant fan all over again.  I wasn't happy with his premature departure, but Tennant was so easy to fall in love with -- he has effectively burned himself into Who the Doctor is to me.

At any rate, I'll be listening!

No, Thank You

Paul,

Thanks for the kind comments.  As far as your own notes to self:

1) It's hard to have any kind of notes when you don't really know how the conversation is going to go.

2) I don't really think you did digress at any point.  One of the things I liken doing this type of segment to is being a panelist at a convention.  The only problem is where you might have a moderator on a panel who will cut you off, I feel that since you have taken time to graciously appear on the program, I'm going to let you have your say.  It's not about what Judy and I think, and I find myself cringing sometimes in listening to this or viewing some old episodes when Keith, Andrea, or Judy went on too long offering their opinion. it's about what you guys think and I need to move it along.

3) I don't look at it as hijacking.  You simply asked questions I was going to ask Joseph.  In fact, I had sent you and Joseph a list of some sample questions, so it's all cool.  The material was covered.

One last thing, if you are getting the Greywalker series and are getting it through Amazon, please think about clicking on the links here as we'll get a little portion of the sale and that helps us a lot.

BTW, I can't say anything yet, but something you and I discussed about the show a little while ago is going to come about.  I'll have more news on it in a a week or two.

Mostly geeky goodness

FINALLY listened to it last night.. I'm a BAD chronian (or is it riftian?)

Thoughts?  Thoughts are

1 - Funny stuff especially the "Coming soon" bit for Keith, but I gotta agree, how does HE get theme music?

2 - I TOTALLY agree about Spider-man,  I dumped the title halfway through Brand New Day, I wasn't as bothered about the Mephisto thing, but more the "let's ignore the last 10 years" thing.  I'd like to see a bit more of a roundtable on "This months" stuff though.

3 - The horror discussion went on a bit long.  It was interesting, but I started to flag towards the end.  I think 30-45 minutes would be a better alocation of time

4 - The game review.  Despite loving games, this was not my favourite portion of the show.  Maybe the reviewer needs a bit more time to mature, but sometimes, he doesn't quite bring the goods.  I'd also like to see the section expanded a little to cover what's coming up/out in the next month that we should be looking at.

I loved "hawk's" segment (the guy always makes me grin.  While I disagree with him a little about the prequels (there are "a few" good bits which need keeping.  I think though, just having the rules meant the segment was a little weak.  I'd probably keep the rules, but have one a month for a bit, leaving the rest of the time for other things.

all in all it was a good second show, the length of the horror discussion did make the rest seem a little rushed though.  It was nice to hear a British accent, and I'm glad Orenthal explained the stuff about the TV programme since I'd never heard of it.  You definitely have at least one non NYC/New Jerseyian listener.

Yes

I too think the round table should be limited to 30 minutes.  :^)

The pacing would be snappier.

Thanks

Thanks for the comments.  Addressing a few of them:

1 - Who says the others won't have a theme song?  Keep listening.  ;)

3 - I think when the next episode comes out, the hour may not seem so bad.  I think the main problem is that we go about thirty to forty minutes before we even hit the Roundtable.  Again, keep listening.  ;)

Oh, and keep listening.  ;)
