And That...

is what the English department calls irony, as quoted by a priest in my school.  I am the moderator of the school newspaper and one of the articles suggested was a listing of favorite holiday movies according to a poll taken in the school.

A New Star Wars Holiday Special

You know, the best way for Lucas to live down the original show (and really, was it any worse than Phantom Menace?) would be to use all those prosthetics and CGI programmers to create a NEW Holiday Special that doesn't suck.

"The STAR WARS Holiday SPECIAL...with Ray Romano! ...Leah Remini! ....Brad Paisley! ...The Pussycat Dolls! ...Crispin Glover!  ...Dan Aykroyd!  featuring stock footage of Harrison Ford!  (with Mark Hamill, Peter Mayhew, David Prowse and the rest of the Star Wars Conventioneers!)  On the NEW STAR WARS Holiday Special!"

Ah, but...

Does the Star Wars Special acknowledge the prequels or does it work on its own?  And the whole highlight of the original was watching Bea Authur, who really didn't need the work at the time, belting it out in the Catina.  We would need Bea Authur again.

Dark Side vs. Light...

It depends.  If George wanted to torture us, it could be the story of puberty-stricken "Anny" Skywalker helping Jar-Jar make his way back to Naboo for their version of "Life Day" while avoiding Federation blockades and enjoying long humorous Gungin slapsticky scenes. Throw in Ewoks, Threepio's lost "family", an extended disco/hip-hop version of "Lapti-Nik" performed by The Cheetah Girls and you've got yourself an hour of what Dr. Clayton Forrester calls "Deep Hurting". ...ending with newly elected Queen Maude the First singing a song about Life Day to the John Williams theme.

OR...it could be good.  With...um.  Certainly a post Episode VI reunion would...no, Harrison would never do it... or...well, to be honest, I can't see a "Good" option.

Orenthal Says...

...that the prequels never existed, so that would give a new holiday special a leg up.  But that didn't stop them from making a lousy one in the first place in the 70's when Lucas had no idea how the prequels were going to turn out.

Well, Hawkman can live in

Well, Hawkman can live in denial, but we have to accept that the only SW movie written with an adult audience in mind (and with a mind on the story as much as on the potential merchandising) was 'Empire'.  Jar Jar?  How about Wikkit?   Disco in Jabba's Palace?  Really?  I simply accept that SW is a film series meant for kids, which makes the Holiday Special fit that much better. :)

If Lucas is going to do anything with a holiday special, it will be animated like Clone Wars or with an entirely new set of characters like his upcoming series.

I'd actually like to see a show from the post 'Jedi' era.

Sorry it took me a while to

Sorry it took me a while to get back to you on this.

But as much as SW is a series made for children, when I unleash my inner 9 year old on the prequels...he flees in terror.

Superman is dated and my inner 9 year old is mesmerized.

SW prequels...not so much.

Yes, there was much with the stupid in the original trilogy, but the dumbassery quotient was raised by a factor of 1,000 by the prequels.  And don't get me started on Jar Jar Fetchit or the evil (Asian) Trade Federation.

And Darth Vader is a bad@$$.  Not a whiny b!tch.

No way, no how.

Padme NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! My big black @$$.

The only thing that happened in the prequels was the Yoda vs. Doku fight, and I might give you the Obi Wan and Anakin fight at the end.

That's it.

Feh on the prequels I say.

I've farted better stories in my sleep.

Scrooged

I'm not getting why Scrooged doesn't get more votes here.  I'm not expecting it to win, but it's a great movie.  Anything with Lee Majors makes it a great movie.

Scrooged is a great movie.

Scrooged is a great movie.  It's on the short list every year of movies we'll watch.  Murray is (always) great and there are some classic performances in the supporting cast.  There are dozens of 'Christmas Carol' retreads, but this one holds up VERY well after 20 years.

The problem with this poll is

The problem with this poll is that it's of holiday movies rather than holiday specials.  I watch a couple of holiday specials every year (when I can find them), but the only one that will ALWAYS make me stop flipping the channels is The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.  You know, the GOOD one narrated by Boris Karloff.  On this poll I voted for The Nightmare Before Christmas just because it's the only one of these movies that I actually like enough to own.

And was I hallucinating, or did you just use the phrase "Anything with Lee Majors is a great movie"?

Oh, wait.  Look who's talking ...

Holiday Specials

It would be fine to include some holiday specials, but since there are so many of them, you run the risk of alienating someone.  As it was, someone questioned why I didn't include Christmas Vacation in the list when I included Die Hard.  I actually took the list from Entertainment Weekly.  I tweaked it with movies such as Scrooged, which I will again ask why not so much love here?  I also removed a few which I didn't get.

And yes, Lee can make any bad movie or TV show watchable.  Problem?
