SModcast

Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier produce and host this podcast that offers their odd takes on just about everything.  Those of you with the delicate ears, it's very explicit.  I've been subscribed to this podcast for some time, but never got a chance to listen to it.  It's not bad.  It's not great either.  I'm going to give it a few more episodes to see if I'm in for good.  Anybody else listen to this show?

I'm In

Part Two of the pity fest wasn't a pity fest, but rather an acceptance of what has happened and then a rip into one of the rauchiest and funniest episodes they've done so far.  They did an episode on Christmas Eve that I haven't listened to yet.  (I've gotten behind on the podcast listening this week.)

Recent Episodes of SModcast

You know, when Zack and Miri Make a Porno tanked at the box office, I was looking forward to the next installment of the Smodcast to hear Smith relate where the movie failed to garner attention.  All indications were that he had a small hit on his hands, but then it tanked.  There hasn't been a SModcast since a week before the movie opened and now there have been two episodes in the last two weeks.  The episodes are two parts of what is essentially Smith working through what went wrong.  The bottom line though is that he refuses to take any responsibility. (at least in part one.  I haven't listened to part two yet.  Part one was a freaking two hours long!  And people complained about the early episodes of the Rift.  At least we offered variety.  Smith goes on and on about how he doesn't get why people wouldn't want to see a movie he wrote and directed with Seth Rogan as a star entitled Zack and Miri Make a Porno.)

I hope there's some light at the end of the tunnel for part two or I may be jettisoning this Howard Stern, "Why doesn't anybody love me?" mope-fest quickly.

Kevin and "success"

The reason Kevin continues to make films is because he is one of the least expensive filmmakers.  Zack & Miri will make its money in DVD sales and that why the Weinsteins continue to finance him.

Clerks 2, for example, cost $5million to make.  That's it.  And it made $26million in the theatre.  No brainer.

Kevin's BEST BO was $30.6.  This makes him the world's most successful direct-to-video director/writer since it would mean very little to the studios if they didn't have to shop the prints around for 5-6 weeks.

The saddest part is that he's an excellent writer and has good stories to tell, but Kevin and the studios will only see Jersey Girl and Make A Porno as their basis for Kevin's viability.  This result means we'll likely see another Jersey "triology" film.

I think Kevin had a good run as the quirky guy in Catch & Release (one of the best parts of a really tedious film) and he stole scenes in Die Hard and Daredevil.  But I think his calling is to write a novel.  He could write our generation's story if he could pry his ass away from an Avid machine and put his characters to bed.
