If I Recall
You had stations like navigation, engineering, communications.
While you were on those stations you tracked ships power, shields, weapons, and sat and waited for the captain to say what to do. If you did not go on the away mission you were hanging in space watching the others play.
We played it a couple of times in chess club. It was not my favorite.

That was the main problem
That was the main problem with the game. If you weren't on the away team, you were left sitting up watching those panels and doing nothing, unless something was built into the game to deal with it, like a battle with a Klingon Battlecriuser.
But I was thinking that if this was online, you could run an away team while having the people up in the ship doing more than just sitting there, provided you planned it out right.
